ABOUT THE ROLE
Supported by National Lottery Heritage Fund, The ‘Hands-On Heritage’ (HOH) project is a dedicated programme to provide expert guidance and tools to help people and communities to take the lead in activities to highlight, protect, conserve and regenerate historic buildings across Northern Ireland. In this role, you will show community groups and individuals how to read, record, research and respond to their local built heritage. This will involve the development of a heritage recording and reporting app which you will use to empower general public and local communities to engage with heritage across NI. You will work with UAH committee, staff and heritage professionals to bring the project to a successful close.
UAH is the lead independent voice for the promotion of built heritage, its protection, conservation and regeneration in Northern Ireland, and across the nine counties of Ulster. We work to defend Northern Ireland’s historic buildings and promote appreciation, preservation and conservation of these precious historic assets.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND SPECIFICATION
You will be responsible for the delivery of the engagement phase of the Hands-On Heritage Project in collaboration with the key consultants, other UAH staff and committees including to:
- Deliver the final phase of the project, promoting a mix of traditional and modern technical participation tools including short guides, and associated toolkit supporting the heritage recording and reporting app across Northern Ireland
- lead on delivery of associated promotional events and outreach activities to the public and local communities across NI in the form of launch and, networking events, roadshows, workshops, competitions and exhibitions.
KEY OUTCOMES
- To lead on the final testing and development of the ‘HOH Heritage Recording & Reporting App’ to ensure best standard of information provision and user functionality.
- To lead on the creation and promotion of HOH “How To” short guides on themes relating to people and community led action for built heritage in Northern Ireland.
- To lead on the promotion and scheduling of events associated with the project.
- To promote the ‘HOH Heritage Recording & Reporting App’ to the widest possible audience, across Northern Ireland via in person outreach, social media, website and targeted public engagement initiatives/events. Compile press releases and deal with queries and/or interviews with the press and media in promoting the project.
- To liaise directly with local groups across NI supporting them to read, research and record their local built heritage via the app.
- On completion of the project, to work with an Evaluation consultant to ensure all objectives have been met.
- To support local groups in the compilation of built heritage lists/guides for 4 local areas.
- Work closely with the Chair, other UAH staff and Committee(s) to make best use of management and administrative support for the successful delivery of the project within budget, timescales, and objectives contained in the National Heritage Lottery Fund (NHLF) application and project plan.
Activities are not restricted to this list. Other similar and/or reasonable activities may present themselves as part of the development and/or delivery of the Heritage: HOH Project. The Heritage Projects Officer will be tasked with these alongside or instead of above tasks.
COMPETENCIES – Essential
- Degree or equivalent professional qualification.
- Post-graduate qualification in architecture, archaeology, building surveying, planning or equivalent experience.
- Full driving licence and access to use of car which must include insurance cover for work.
- Knowledge of issues relating to the protection of historic buildings in Northern Ireland.
- Experience of delivering successful projects for community outreach.
- Excellent written communication.
- Understanding of apps and their application
- Ability to understand/ use websites and online resources.
- Experience of use Social Media platforms as a communication and marketing tool.
- Good presentation skills and expertise in communicating complex issues to a range of audiences.
- Experience in the use of Microsoft Office tools
- Experience of working in the heritage or community sector
- Highly motivated and able to motivate others.
- Demonstrable ability to work as part of a team.
- Highly organised and able to prioritise workload with demonstrable ability to plan and deliver projects.
COMPETENCIES – Desirable
- Degree in architecture, archaeology, building surveying, planning or associated discipline. Demonstrate successful delivery of projects.
- Experience of working with app developers.
- Experience of development and management of websites and online resources.
- Experience of working in association with funders, and public administration.
- Experience in training and capacity building.
